Heroes: Hip-Hop Saved My Life
In this program, audience members will learn about the mythological figures in the Museum’s exhibition Heroes: Mortals and Myths in Ancient Greece and how they might relate to contemporary heroes of the hip-hop movement.
With the familiar background of beats, music, and lyrics, Heroes: Hip-Hop Saved MyLife! is simultaneously a critique of, and tribute to, the space, voice, and progressive nature of America’s newest indigenous art form: Hip-Hop.
This program is a dynamic and moving presentation, imploring the audience to undergo a fantastic journey from the beginning of the underground Hip-Hop movement to its current mainstream appeal. Celebrating the heroes of Hip-Hop: DJ Kool Herc, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lauryn Hill, Richard Colon a.k.a. Crazy Legs and MC Lyte.
Hip-Hop itself is also celebrated as a hero in the resistance of urban culture to succumb to mainstream pressure to assimilate. Infusing messages of progress and hope in the lyrics and the dancer’s movement, the performance addresses the pop-culture undertones of racism, misogyny, violence & mind-less entertainment present in mainstream music.
